What is a Hammam?
A Hammam, also known as the Turkish Hammam or Turkish bath, is the Middle Eastern variant of a steam bath, which can be described as a wet or dry relative of the sauna. Although the first Hammams originated from Arabia and bath culture was a central part of Roman life, it was Turkey who popularized the tradition by making Hammams available to people of all statuses.
What is it like?
The Hammam ritual is rather simple, but it does involve several procedures all aimed at cleansing and relaxing. Many modern-day Hammams utilize the same procedures. Traditionally, the treatment lasted a set period of time, but visitors were free to lounge in the cooling areas for as long as they liked.
Preparation and adjusting to the warmth
There are areas for changing and you are provided with a bathrobe, towels and slippers. For better cleansing results the body has to adjust to the heat and therefore, it is recommended to use the Steam Room and to drink plenty of water before or after every bath.
Full-body scrub and soaping
From there you enter the Hammam, which houses the large marble bed. A therapist conducts the body cleansing by scrubbing it, using olive soap and a special Kese glove. Followed by a soap massage enveloping you in foam clouds, ensuring real relaxation and sense of purity.
Completing the treatment and relaxing massage
After the foam massage we highly recommend you continue the treatment with a relaxing oil massage to nourish the body. If you choose not to have a massage, you can just relax for some time and enjoy a cup of tea or glass of water. You also will be prompted by a rich body cream for skin rejuvenation.
The Turkish bath ritual feature warming up in the Hammam Steam Bath, a gentle Kessa peeling and soft oil soap massage on a warm marble table.
For a deeper relaxation continue your ritual with relaxing full body massage.
